When Damon and I were together in the bedroom, I could forget the world. The years that divided us, the shadows of our pasts, and the expectations of others never seemed to matter. I liked seeing the stray strands of silver when I ran my fingers through his unkempt curls. I loved getting lost in the feeling of his confident hands gripping against my curves. I maybe loved it too much.

As much as we enjoyed our games, there were lives on the line. Secrets had to be kept. Damon and I couldn’t get carried away and get sloppy in keeping a composed facade. We were starting to forget the stakes of our gambit.

All these thoughts nagged me as I listened to my father’s muffled voice through the basement door. I sat there on the steps leading down to the gym, wine cellar, and laundry room. Every passing second felt like a full minute, and I debated cracking open one of Damon’s expensive wine bottles. Instead, I stared at my phone, shopping for sunscreen for Lydia and Damon.

I found a sunscreen stick that would be easy for Lydia to apply herself, while I selected a Vitamin C moisturizer for Damon with SPF forty. From years of exercise and healthy living, Damon looked about ten years younger than his actual age, but that didn’t mean his skin wouldn’t appreciate the helping hand.

I was checking out online when I heard my father ask, “You mind if I catch a ride with you to work?”

How could he refuse? What would he even say?

I’m sorry, but your daughter is hiding behind that door. I am supposed to go into work with her. By the way, we’ve been married for three weeks now. Would you like to attend our one-month anniversary dinner party? It will next Friday, of course. We really hope you can make it.

The notion was absurd. No, he had to agree, and I waited until the house was quiet before I took off for the subway station. Damon fixed himself a glass of water as I arrived at the office. His ocean eyes were instantly apologetic. The tidal waves grew tempestuous with a potent mixture of emotions.

“You did what you had to do, Damon,” I sighed. “Don’t worry about it.”

Shrugging out of my marigold wool coat, I watched as he settled down into his desk chair. I hung it in the closet next to his before going to lean against his desk. His gaze hadn’t lost any of its chagrin.

“I’m still sorry, Sabrina,” he admitted earnestly. “I hated leaving you there. I never want to make you feel like some dirty little secret.”

“But what we’re doing is a secret,” I pointed out.

He nodded. “I know.”

“And I willingly agreed to our arrangement.”

“I know,” he repeated.

“Damon,” I pleaded softly, my hand reaching for his face. “You never make me feel anything but wanted. Don’t let one little misstep ruin our good morning. We just need to be more careful.”

“Alright,” he agreed.

Kissing his temple, I fell
